Title: The Official "Why I'm Quitting" Thread
Post by: ShadowDiver on June 12, 2009, 04:29:49 PM
Since a few of us are doing what we can to kick the habit, I was trying to think of different ideas we, as a forum, could help one another.  We don't see each other often enough to someone in the ass for lighting up.  :dontknow: That's out.  Brainstorming... brainstorming....

Well, without some great epiphany,  :idea1:  I thought we could start with taking turns coming up with reasons we shouldn't smoke.

One at a time.  I'll start.

1.)  You STINK!!!!!!  :pottytrain2:

Next!  :headbang:

X10 :icon_thumright: to everyone Joining this movement.. I dont want to say ride or train etc cause people fall off of those..

Tracy, Thanks for starting this, I can see this thread geting bigger than any thread yet..

If you feel like puffing, POst Here instead.. We will :thefinger: you till you change your mind..

Let me add this from today as a reason to quit..
KWR8728 popped in at the house as the UPs man was leaving, Finishing my bike we suited up and Itook him on about a 100 mile tour of backroads I have only spoke of but never posted, Only stopping once for a soda/water and fuel for him. Usually im stopping at each turn just for a reason to smoke.. Not any more..

Moral to this story.. Im going to need a better saddle for the bike now and Quiting is going to easily pay for it..  Ohh I can see the mileages rising now :BangHead:

 :wheels: :wheels: :wheels:

If your Smoking, Your A^% Better Be on Fire..

Awesome guy's!  :icon_salut:
I smoked for twenty-something years and quit 3 years ago.
I too was always looking for any reason to stop and smoke.
I was always trying to finish my smoke while everyone else was suited up and waiting.
Be strong. You CAN do it. If you fall off the wagon, DO NOT GIVE UP!

And yes, you DO stink.

Now a more serious note:

Ok I'm on the first step just so everyone knows how my attempt is going. I did buy a carton last night. My wife and I both smoke and I told her this is it. Start slowing down b/c there will be no more bought. We both smoke right around a pack a day so it will only be 5 days til they're gone. I am going to do my best to stick to it. It will help me A LOT if she does do. We'll see. Also would like to mention it is nice to have a "support group".  :headbang: Maybe I can really quit this time. The longest I have ever quit before was 2 or 3 days. And also another thanks to Tracy for starting this thread. It will help us all. Also former smokers chiming in with how much better they feel, etc will help too. So post away about how wonderful you feel it will help motivate the rest of us.

Bandit, if you need a good quitting aid I would recommend going to a Dr. and getting a prescription for Chantix. I quit about 3 years ago for a year using it. It blocks the dopamine(?) receptors in your brain and causes the satisfying feeling you get from smoking to disappear. It also lets you really taste the cigs by blocking this and they taste like crap. I was able to quit using the product for only 2 weeks and had no real cravings. I did start back after a year because I wanted to, not because I craved it. And on a side note, I have found that since using Chantix, I can "quit" alot easier. I haven't really been serious about quitting until last week because my allergies are pretty bad this year and smoking exacerbates my symptoms. Whatever method you use, I wish you nothing but success. Good luck

Man oh Man am I having a guilt trip here !!  2 months ago my wife agreed to allow me to buy a bike after 15 years of trying to talk her into it. The deal was that I would quit smoking and use the money I spend on cigs to buy the bike. (around $180.00 a month) Well I haven't held up my end of the bargain and I feel like an A**. Made my wife a promise and then turned around and didn't live up to it. So, today is gonnna be day one. I'm putting on one of the patches I bought and joining you guys in the "Great Challenge". I'ts going to be extrememly hard because she smokes as well and having one in your face makes it tough. I know because of all the failed attempts in the past. Anyway, I'm in and good luck to us all.  :usarmy:

I can tell you with certainty, when you're in the hospital dying of lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, or any of the many other diseases associated with a lifetime of smoking, the healthcare professionals... docs, nurses, etc... look at you differently as you're laying there in the ICU.  They have a different attitude about someone dying due to a "lifestyle" choice as opposed to someone there for other, non-lifestyle related health reasons....  I'm not saying they judge you or compromise your care or even care less about you, but they are human, and human nature is still at play for those folks too.  They assume you accepted the risks associated with smoking and you're really there as a result of the choices you made in your life... In the end though, their attitude has less "fight for your life" to it, and a lot more "make him/her comfortable because the end is near".

Pretty sad really, if you think about it... Not saying it's right or wrong... just sayin...

Just like other things in life.... KNOW and UNDERSTAND the RISKS and CONSEQUENCES....

What's the big deal? Why quit such a sophisticated habit.
Smoking and it's related illnesses only kills 400,000 Americans every year.
You can buy a motorcycle with the money you spend to stink like an unwashed ass.
Your house smells like an unwashed ass.
Your car smells like an unwashed ass.
Those burn holes in your clothes and car upholstery look fabulous.
You can't taste or smell things.
Your fingers have those way cool yellow stains on them.
You get to stand outside in crappy weather puffing on a cigarette looking like a crackhead in an alley.
If you don't get to smoke, you get all weird and start acting like a kid with ADD that just traded his Ritalin for a sack full of candy bars.

I mean what's not to like?  :goofy:

Another day almost over and its still a non-smoking life.  Went for a ride today and had to remind myself not to stop at my normal 'smoke break' spots. I feel pretty good, albeit, that feeling of something missing.  I think that something missing is ok as long as I'm adding something such as years to my life with my wife and girls.

Keep up the good work folks!  This is a non-smoking forum.  :headbang:

Pretty good post there RRW. I can say my house doesn't stink tho. NEVER smoke inside. Do have the yellow stains.  :laughing7:  The crappy weather...cold or hot...does suck butt...

Anyways I'm with VFR800Lady as far as progress....smoked way less today than normal. I have tried cold turkey before and that just doesn't work for me...not that it doesn't work for some but I am really really trying. Gotta get to bed to get some rest to go ridin' tomorrow!  :wheels:

Good luck to all of y'all.  Not that you need a reminder of the worst case, but i lost 2 of my grandparents to smoking related issues (cancer in both).  Both of them only in their Early 60s.  That's YOUNG if you think about it.
Don't forget to still get a good check up from the docs.  Damage could already be done, but at least they can catch it sooner and do something about it.

Well Im drinking now, As I was also last nite.. Will power my friend.. This is something you have to really want for yourself. Doing so for anyother reason means failure. Last time I tried to quit (5yrs ago) it was for a real Love in my life, It didnt work and we arent together anymore either, Still great friend though and she always has a Place in my heart as do I in hers.  Point is you HAVe to want to do this, Nobody else can do it for you. You also reap ALL of the benefits also..

Win Win situation If you can do it..  And you CAN DO IT. Failure is not a option..

Good to hear you are being honest with your self :icon_salut: Everybody keep posting up your progress. Knowing your not the only one trying May help the others..

I did good till about 1pm today and bought 1 Cigar. getting easier to lay them down totally everyday. Some are using the patch which I found doesnt really help all the cravings that go with Quiting.. Tonite starts a new trial for me as I get back to work.
Smoking used to be a way to pass the time while sitting in the drivers seat all day..

:coffee2: Here is to tomorrow. The First day of the rest of Our lives.. Keep up the courage and will power :notworthy:

Got up this morning and put on my last patch.  Now I have to decide if I should buy more patches or if I can tough it out without the extra help.   :dontknow:

I do pretty well when I don't wear one, so I think I'll give it a try.  If the mental period only last 3 days, then I think I should be able to handle it.  It has been over a week since I've lit up.

Friendly suggestion Tracy:  Stick with the full course of the patches...

Can you tough it out?  In ALL likelihood yes, but what's the point of cutting it short other than saving the money?  You'd potentially be making a VERY difficult task unnecessarily even more difficult, right?  Take the nicotine dose afforded by the patch whilst dealing with the mental part of the addiction... the step-down doses afforded by the full course of the patches will wean you off the nicotine.  Afterall, a full course of the patches is still waaaaay cheaper than the actual $$ cost of smoking.

Im having more trouble with the Mental sides of the issue myself. I found myself holding a Ink Pen like a Cig earlier. and get satisfaction at times from just tasting a Unlit Cigar. Im still breaking down once in awhile and taking a few puffs of the cigar. More for the lingering taste than the Nicotine I think.

Not trying to justify My Insobordination here but 1 cigar a day is a lot better than 2 packs of ciggerettes a day. And so the fight goes on.. Gotta kick it completely :BangHead: :BangHead:

just don't inhale....

Cigars, since they are unfiltered, are waaay more harsh on the ol' lungs compared to cigs

Consider "nicorette" gum or patches... As Tracy can attest, they really do help if you're really committed to quitting.  They ease the mental side of it too.

If you're not really committed to quitting...well... nothing will help.

Stay focused on your desire to quit... and ALL the reasons you're quitting.  Your desire to quit MUST be stronger than your cravings.

Well after a rough morning I tore the box truck apart and found a very old pack with one but in it just one puff and I had to toss it.. No more today I was eyeing the butt can later so I put it out in the rain ( nasty I know) figure if I let it sit out and when I want a puff I'll go out and take a wiff. For the oral fix I got licorce. I may look like a nut with a piece it hanging out of my mouth but it helps. Not to gross anyone out but I've been expelling things that do not look like they should come from the human body (forreal) Anyway keep up the good work folks! :headbang:

Stay focused on your desire to quit... and ALL the reasons you're quitting.  Your desire to quit MUST be stronger than your cravings.

It's true.  About 3 years ago, I quit completely for about 6 months by using the patch.  But of course, like an idiot, I started back and blamed it on 'stress'.  They do work if you really want to quit.  Just keep something like gum or candy available to take care of the oral craving and all will be good.  Don't keep anything high in fat or calories around because you might blow up like the Michelin man.  I keep those big lifesavers on my desk or in my pocket, so I can just grab one in a hurry and they smell and taste much better than any nasty, disgusting, revolting, putrid, cancer causing, lung hardening, phlegm producing, money draining, insurance increasing cigarette.  (Too much or not enough?)

Definately a "Callenge" in life that isnt Easy.. I Actually started smoking somewhat regular in Jr High school, About age 12 or 13. By age 15 I was smoking a pack a day or close to it.. Im 35 Now. I have tried unsuccesfully several times, Each Time getting closer to actually doing it. This is my Best attempt yet. I have sometime lines Im trying to use based on prior Exp.. And July 4th is the completion of it all do or DIE for me on that day. Ironically It's Independence day..   I still have not smoked a Coggerette since 6am on 6-11-09. Well I'm not doing so well so far...plan on getting the patch in the next few days and try that...seems to be working for ShadowDiver(Tracy)...Almost out of smokes tho and I am committed to not buying more. It's tough but I am in the first stage. Cutting back A LOT. Tried cold turkey before and didn't work or I would try that Wheatie. Seems like from my experience talking to those who have quit that not the same thing  works for even two people much less everyone. I'm determined to beat this vice this time.  :headbang:

BAnDiT, I threw away half a pack of Marlboros which is what I faced going in..... scared hell out of me.  I had an out for every time I wanted a smoke.  I ran!   Every time I ran, I'd gasp for air, which reminded me of why I was quitting in the first place....  (I ended up being a 5-mile/day jogger) ....  find something out there that reinforces your desire to quit and use it to your advantage....   What I found added a lot to my determination to quit... Its not easy Bandit but you can do it. You got a lot of great years ahead of you..

Wheatie's Advice is spot on as several others have said simillar things.. Find something to do that requires you not to smoke. Maybe go somewhere you cant smoke for several hours.

I wanted a smoke real Bad after dinner, We even sat in the smoking section. I was content to sit there till the urge went away as I had the Cigar I have been Molesting Unlit in the car. Finally my freind wanted to leave n I also realized I had no Lighter on me.. :goofy:

Ok so I went to class tonight talked with some folks about it the are all quitters  :icon_thumright: They wished everyone luck with our  :evil5: Got in the truck and noticed a missed call from my fathers friend he was a 2 plus pack a day got until he decided enough was enough I had told him last year about me wanting to quit and he suggested hypnosys said that it had worked for him ... Any thoughts or comments on this :dontknow:

I thought about the hypnosis route a coupla years ago but didn't have the money. My boss gave me his Chantix that he tried but really didn't want to quit. It worked like a charm for me. You are suppose to keep smoking while you take the pills until you think you can quit. I started a week before we went on a family vacation and I wanted to be done with them on our trip. After that first week the cigs started tasting really bad and the satisfying feeling you get from drawing in the smoke was gone. I stopped on the day we left for Florida(driving from NC) and it really wasn't that bad considering I smoked like a chimney while driving. I was smoke free for over a year and then like a moron, I started back up. I promised my daughter I would quit this time and I'm not gonna go back on that promise. I haven't have a cig in over a week and am feeling pretty good. I haven't used any stop smoking aids this time, and I'm trying not to replace cigarettes with anything that's gonna make me fat. :laughing7: I'm pulling for everyone else on here that's quitting and I hope we can all call ourselves non-smokers from now on. :headbang: :occasion14:

When I quit smoking.... I would ask myself questions from the perspective of a non-smoker... especially when the cravings for a smoke were strong.

I used to enjoy a smoke while drinking coffee and reading the morning paper.  I continued to enjoy drinking coffee and reading the paper, but the cravings during that time were extremely strong..!!!  I'd ask myself... What would a non-smoker be doing or thinking at this moment?

Answering that question became therapeutic..!!  It made me think like a non-smoker, and even more, it made me realize what a slave I had become to cigarettes.

After a while.... when the cravings started to go away, i quit asking myself questions from that perspective.  You know why? ...because I had actually become a non-smoker.

After not having a smoke for a week and a half, for some strange reason I took a drag off a friends yesterday.

Blech!!!!   That was horrible.  Its amazing that one can start smoking with that taste long enough for the bad effects to go away.  I hated it.  I'm pretty sure this is it for me.  No more half-ass quitting.  No more 'I'll just have one'.  It's no longer what I do.  I am a NON-smoker, no ifs, ands, or BUTTS.

I hope all you other 'quitters' are with me on this as much as you appear to be.

Well earlier in this thread I said I wasn't gonna buy any more cigs and haven't. Ran out last night. Had my last 1 just before going to bed. Did pretty good this morning until I got to work. I bummed one cig from another guy here at work and explicitly told him if I ask again tell me NO! This is gonna be it.

So far so good...haven't had a cigarette in 4 hours and just got finished eating lunch so we'll see how this goes...I figure if I can get through 24 hours without one that'll be it. I will have defeated this monster. Good luck to everyone else also I know some are having a hard time but "YOU CAN DO IT!!!"

Well, I feel bad... :crybaby2: Right at 36 hours I gave in and smoked 1. It really was nasty and I didn't like it very much. I won't be doing that anymore. THis cold turkey thing is tough tho. Wish me luck. :icon_thumleft:

Well I still have not laid them down completely. I have cut back a lot, but I will fall back into habit and go have one at break time at work or when I'm stressed out counting money and it will not balance cause some idiot didn't do their job right...AAAARRRRR.  :angry4:  Yeah, I was venting there too, sorry.

It really helps when I'm around people that don't smoke cause I don't want to smoke around them so I don't.

The fact that you're feeling a bit guilty for lighting up when you do is a step in the subconscious right direction, Lady !   Pretty soon the guilt will be replaced with the self-satisfaction of no longer having to feel guilty.  Not to mention the pride and increase in self-esteem generated when it finally becomes official ! ! !     Make sense ?

The thing that keeps me motivated is seeing people buying new toys like cameras and Speed triples! The money I used to piss away killing myself I use to have some fun! I just keep telling myself boy does that Speed triple look cool  :occasion14: I guess I replaced the craving for smokes with one for that Beautiful Speed triple and yes just the name rolling through my head is enough to keep me clean.. Keep the hardwork up and it will pay off!

Relapse Is a B*^%# Havent quit completely myself But its on my mind everytime I give in.

I have cut back alot though.. Maybe 1/2 pack a day or 3 cigars.

Im working on it and not giving up. I was looking online the other day and found some info that the cravings last as long as 3 months :BangHead: :BangHead:

Like VFRlady I find it easier not to smoke around NONSmokers and if I could keep busy dont even think about smoking.. Situations can contribute greatly to the urge of wanting one also. Like Breaktime or Lunch breaks, For me its driving  :BangHead: :BangHead:

Keep at it everybody were all pulling for you (And Me) :icon_thumleft:

Its the start of another non-smoking week.  I did slip up this weekend a couple of times, but it just reinforced why I made the decision to quit.  Maybe you noticed, but after you haven't smoked in a while, the people who do smoke seem a little less desirable. Just seems like the combination of burning money and that unpleasant aroma is enough to say why the ef did I do that? :dontknow:

Well, I've been smoke free for I guess about two weeks now. For me, the cravings are all but gone and I don't find myself thinking about smoking one. My wife is still smoking, so you would think that would be harder, but so far so good. I will say that when I quit last time I didn't smoke for a year then started back up, but that was not because of any bad cravings. I decided I could smoke 1 to 2 a day and I would be able to handle it, but those 1-2 turned into a pack a day again. So this time I'm not touching one so I know I won't start back. Good Luck guys and gal and keep it up!!!

I've only had a couple cigs since Friday morning. 0 today and hopefully continue cutting back. Honestly will probably have one every now and then for a few more days but we'll see. At least I'm being honest about it. I went from just over a pack a day up until about last monday and then started cutting back and by friday had 1 all day so I feel like I have made progress. And for everyone else on this "quitting" wagon keep up the good work and we will all get through it together!!!

I never smoked but about 6 weeks....too many sports to smoke in school, all my best "non-sports" Friends smoked, so I tried it after High School graduation. Watched a guy in a Huntsville Shoneys light up, inhale, blow it back out....thought, why don't I just burn yard leaves, stand over em', inhale. Seemed kinda' pointless to me, so I wadded up my pack of Marlboros with only 2 missin', and never tried again.......GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU....... :headbang: :occasion14:

Did you remember the flowers smelling so good? :dontknow:

I can actually walk up the stairs here at the plant (all 8 floors) and not fall over from lack of oxygen. :icon_thumright:

My wife and girls are more willing to cuddle up with me when I get home from work. :hello2:

With the money I saved from 1 pack of smokes, I rode 150 miles. :wheels:

If I put the money saved in a jar, I can get a new VFR in less than 5 years.  A used one in maybe three. :blesk:

Just some thoughts.

Well I haven't had a smoke since the 21st. Only had one that day and the two previous days. So, I'm smoke free for a week and a half so far. I still get cravings. People at work smoke and my wife is still trying. She only smoked like 3 or 4 yesterday. The cravings aren't as bad as they were and it is amazing how much you SMOKERS stink! LOL

Sam...you can do it man! I think it would be extra hard to do while tootling around the country in that truck too if it were me but you CAN do it!

I'm still holding strong.  Its tough, but I just keep telling myself that I don't smoke.  Then the craving passes.  I usually grab a peppermint or gum and it helps.

Keep up the good work, everyone.

And Sam, I will find you and when I do.... you've had it, pal!!!!  I will assimilate you!

Yep thanks guys, That was a mistake before, Thought I could just light up a cigar every now n then to help with the Addiction. It just ggradually kept building. This past wknd was my personnnal deadline, I was also planning on being home too but instead I have been sitting in this damn truck all wknd not doing s*&t .. You can bet Im not gonna agree to work any more holidays. Although with the events last friday I didnt have much choice.. Sure would have made things easier with gettting a new laptop too.. :(

I have smoked up all my cigar butts and now only have hard candies. Im going nuts. Just gotta convince myself this is for the bettter, This is for Me, The thoughts of killing someone for a smoke will go away :)  20+ yrs of 2+ packs a day of Marlboro Menthol 100's has sure built up a hell of a Addiction. On a Brighter side I have prettty much quit drinking too. But i think thats mostly to I wont drink n drivve or drink n ride. I love my Nite rides when Im at home so that pretty much curbs any evening drinking activties. Cool Nites, No traffic, Not to mention the difficulty factor when you cant see where your going.. Sam it may also take a shock to help quit, was visiting my machinist buddy Rob on Monday as he's making some bits for my 8 spoke he usually has ashtrays all over his shop one with in 2 ft at all times and the shop reeked of smoke. First thing I noticed walking in the door was no cloud of smoke then I noticed no ashtrys ( this guy had like 50 out ) so I ask him if he quit Oh boy did he :sad1: He had some kind of throat infection the the smoke had inflamed it swelled up so he went to the ER his blood pressure was so high that the would not let him leave for the days freaked him out. 3 to 4 pack a day he smoked they told get him either quit or die buddy He said it's been rough but it beats a pine box.

Sam, don't let falling off the wagon discourage you.  There are tools out there to help you reach your goal.  The most important tool is you, though.  If you can just convince yourself that this is what you want to do, you will be that much further ahead.  I'm using the patch.  It helps both physically (by weaning off the nicotine slowly) and mentally (by having the patch on my arm I know I don't NEED to smoke).  You may try that, or the gum, prescriptions, or even hypnotherapy (you know... voodoo?).  We have also heard about those who have quit cold turkey.  Its really up to you.  You are strong enough. We all know this.  You have to commit.  Get it done, Sam! :headbang:

That'd be me...pretty much. I don't need no stinkin' patch... :booty: (forreal)

You can do it Sam. I am 16 days smoke free and honestly when I notice it the most is when I get up in the mornings. I used to hack up "stuff" for a hour or so. Still hacking up some but seems to be getting better since I don't replace it everyday.

HANG IN THERE SAM!

It's tough but you can do it you have a s*&t e load of folks here that have your back  :headbang: Lasttime I checked this place was open all night and theres always someone around to hit up when you feel the need to fire one up. Seems like for me everyone on the jobsite has taken up smoking  :BangHead: Since it's still raining here I tend to hold up in the house and have some beers everytime I make a run to the fridge I tend to try and gravitate to the garage ( old habits) but I'll instead grab a piece of leftover chicken, or a peppermint taffy to tide me over basically whatever I can shove in my pie hole roflol And man for Petes sake take it easy on yourself  :icon_salut: Your trying that is a big deal  :occasion14:

Thanks guys. I keep meaning to get the "patch" but forget when ever im in a drug store or walmart.. The las 2 weeks have just had 1 fubar after another, Not easy when your stressed :BangHead:

Quiting is constantly on my mind even as I puff away. I keeep telling myself Nomore, I can do this. Then Bam stress situation hits. Im gonna do this. No doubt even if I have to lock myself in a closet (last resort).. Unfortunately I have a High stress Job, Although most wouldnt belive me when I say that.. The demands put on us at times is a real pita....
I know they stink, Hell I can even smell them now myself sitting in the ashtray. The addiction I need to conquer and My mind telling me OOhh just 1 more...

Well I gotta go. Heading over to tthe truck stop for the nite to pick up in ATL in the morning..

I think I will have a philly cheese steak n a Jack n coke.. This week is in the toilet anyway..

You should talk to my wife. I was talking to her the other day and asking her how many she had smoked. I think her answer was 2 or 3 that day. I told her if I can quit anyone can. She agreed.

Usually when I'm out on the bike my attitude is different. I am away from all the problems at home with money and other stresses. I do a good job of not letting that stuff interfere with my "bike time" b/c that is pretty much my happy time. I am constantly stressing at home about bills, Tracy having no job, not knowing if we are gonna make next house payment, etc. and at work with my boss who is pretty cool most of the time but can be a real dick, and with workload. One week I wonder if I'm gonna get laid off then...like this week...I have so much to do I cannot get it all done "on time".

So don't use anything for excuses including stress. There are no excuses. You CAN do this. I truly mean it when I say "If I can ANYONE can!!!".

Working on the patch for now.. Maybe 1 or 2 smokes a day. Hardest time is evenings and mornings. When I walk into a store I have to tell myself NO.. Still get killer cravings even with the patch at times.. Although it didnt bother me 1 bit at the track day. Hell I was too busy just trying to catch a break betweeen sessions.
I started on the patch the evening before our barber track day.. Jim can Attest I was very very figidy that evening. and I did have 1 smoke I bummmed from the waitress at breakfast which gave me 1 hell of a buzz.

Were getting closer and closer every day.. Not to make excuses but its a lot better than the 2+ packs a day I was doing..

Not gonna be easy but it will happen. Constantly think of quiting and yet constantly Yurn for a few quick puffs on just 1.. Its like a tug of war with your self :BangHead: :BangHead:

I enjoy having a little more money to send my creditors considering my finances right now...and the main thing is I don't STINK now. The cancer thing....prolly get it or some other type anyways. It's more genetic than anything. It has been proven but you just don't hear it in mainstream media. I have had several family members that never smoked die of emphysema or lung cancer.

Not to mean that genetically you will just get it but some people are just more likely to get it b/c of their geneology. With all the stuff in my family on both sides I will more than likely die of heart problems or some form of cancer.

I just put my 14 year old dog down today because he had heart problems and was barely breathing for about 20 hours. It was horrible to watch him labor with every breath and he probably felt like he was suffocating. I have heard that's what emphysema is like, so in that regard, I would not wish that fate on anyone or myself.

I smoked regularly for 10 years and quit soon after my daughter was born. Working out, sunflower seeds, and nico gum were how I did it. I still crave cigs and have them every now and then especially when I have a beer.

I still haven't had a whole cigarette since June 21st. I think I previously said June 19th but that was an error. It was Father's Day which was June 21st. I did have a couple drags off one a few days after but haven't even done that since the beginning of July. Only bad thing is I have gained a little weight but I think that is better than smoking.

UPDATE: Had one cigarette about 4 weeks ago and it almost made me puke...didn't even finish it! Would have prolly  never even smoked it if I weren't drinking at the time. So almost 7 months non-smoking for me! Post up with your progress folks.

Well I fell off the wagon and back on again a number of times but I'm still trying! I keep telling myself the money I'm spending on this nasty habit is a shiny new bike :wheels:

If you continue to try, that means you really want out of it !   Stick with it  -- it'll happen.   So will the shiny new bike ! !

I have known people that just decided to quit and never smoked again, but most people take several tries...I have know a few that took 9 or 10 tries.  Just keep trying!!!

Yep Steve, that's the usual scenario....  I quit CT in '80.... what kept me from lighting up was when I wanted a ciggy, I put my running shoes on and did a few miles....  worked ! !

In some cases like mine it just means I'm able to put gas in my truck to get to work to keep things going. And helps to have gas for the bike too!  :wheels:

I have known people that just decided to quit and never smoked again, but most people take several tries...I have know a few that took 9 or 10 tries.  Just keep trying!!!
I don't even really like the smell of them anymore...I quit cold turkey but I know everyone is different. My wife is doing very very well for someone who smoked years and years more than I did. She still has one every now and then. I can tell b/c I smell it but I thinks she thinks she is sneaky.  (forreal)

Anyways, just keep on thinking bout that new bike you could be buying or anything else you want/need.

I for one am not gonna preach about cancer and what not b/c I believe if you're gonna get it you're gonna get it just may make it come faster.

I have 3 main reasons for quitting.
1. Myself-Just didn't like it anymore and what it was doing to me physically/mentally.

2. Money-Those things are getting really expensive!

3. My Family-I know I could die of natural causes or an accident but it's just one less thing.

I still have not quit. I cut back, but then pick it up again like crazy till I fuss at myself to cut back again. I really want to quit, but it's more out of boredom and habit.  :BangHead:

So out of all the attempts at quitting posted, only one survived and lived to tell about it ?  (oooops, sorry!  Poor choice of words there)

 :laughing7:

So for those of you who tried and didn't get past boot camp, are you still thinking about returning to the front lines and giving it another shot ?    :icon_thumright:
