Title: Wife and an Old Buddy helped find some "skuuter racin' pics & info"
Post by: skuuter on February 06, 2010, 02:44:38 AM
As most of You know, I had an Ex that decided most all of my "Auto Racin' Stuff" needed to be Bonfire Material as she was leavin' for Houston, Texas with the new boyfriend..... :sad1: :dontknow:........well, anyway, my Wife has searched diligently in old piles of "crap" from the old motorcycle shop, bicycle shop buildings, and finally came up with a few photos, etc. (had no idea I still had em').......also gotta' thank my old Buddy, Jimmy Means (NASCAR LMS, and Winston Cup Racer) for findin' an extra copy of a 1976 NASCAR Press Handbook with my Huntsville Speedway / Alabama State LMS point standings and sendin' it to me......gonna' take pics of this stuff, and post em' for the few Folks that have shown some interest in my "Old, Past Life"...... :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:.....always been one to do what I enjoyed at the time, then move on and close the door to the past stuff.....I enjoy startin' new Life chapters...past Triumphs, Failures, Good Experiences/Bad Experiences just ready You for the next chapter of Your Life and as far as "competition" in sports or hobbies, I never compete with anyone except myself.....best way there is to be a Winner...... :headbang: :occasion14:

Looking forward to seeing some pics Skuuter.  Do you have a scanner or know someone who does where you can scan this stuff instead of taking pictures of it?  If not I think you can get that done at Kinkos or any print shop.  For you non locals, let me just tell you, Skuuter has some really good old stories.

OK, my Printer is supposed to be a "Printer-Scanner".....it has a "SCAN" button on it. Isn't it possible to scan these old Race Car Photos, then somehow transfer them to a File on my Computer.....?....... :headbang:

There should be.  Is the scanner software installed on your 'puter?  Should have installed with the printer driver.

It was an awesome finish to the race! I was very happy to see Jr. do so well.

And Steve, yes they stopped for a pothole. When you're going over 190 that can be deadly. Luckily only  a couple flat tires and a broken front splitter out of it.

I'd say pretty much weather-related.... if you recall, it's been a relatively severe the past coupla weeks er so   !!

Daytona hasn't been paved since 1978 (slated for re-pavin' next year), and the "larger-than-usual" amounts of rain have caused a seepage problem underneath the surface causin' splits along the pavement lane seams. A coupla' spots finally started chunkin' out. This same thing happened to Charlotte Motor Speedway (Lowes) in North Carolina several years ago when my Brother worked there. Besides the obvious risk of blown tires, and spins, there is the danger of pieces comin' through the grilles, or worse, windshields of the cars...... :headbang:

That makes sense...I drove up 68 from Ducktown to Tellico a week ago and notice quite a few places were the constant rain was causing the road to break up.  There were several curves that were broken up a foot or two into the lane.

Several Roads around here now have water seepage along those seams since all of the extra moisture this Winter. I went to Salem, Indiana to race cars in 1975 and the race was called for the same reason. We were chunkin' it out in practice...never even held a qualifyin' race that week.... :headbang:

NICE Find NOMO.....believe me, it is a tough Sport, even on the "Saturday Night Short Track Tours" around the Country.....and like it or not, I still think NASCAR has the Best Management and PR Departments of any Motorsport. Most of the Others would rarely/barely have a venue to be seen on TV if not for NASCAR's Success.....Yes, SPEED Channel's bills get paid primarily off NASCAR..... :headbang: :occasion14:

Ya probably right on them being the best Management and PR departments in the country as far as Nascar racing but they need to get the ph*** outta AMA racing, they're trying to turn MC racing into a Nascar circus and its pretty much destroyed the sport. Back to Nascar.....yeah it takes skill, balls and a V of steel to run but as far as i'm concerned it doesn't touch on the real abilities of a vehicle....turning both ways!! Dunno how ya can compare say Daytona to Laguna Seca, elevation changes, blind corners ect....
I ain't ever gunna convince the Nascar crowd their sport sucks in comparison because its its own sport, good in its own way and quite frankly not fair to judge against other forms of racing. I enjoy it for what it is but wont pick it over Touring car, Grand Am or F1 as a event i'd go and see.

Actually, MY FAVORITE RACIN' SPORT is R/C Car Racin'..... :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:.....another thing that makes NASCAR so tough is They still enforce rules that keep the cars usin' rear wheel drive, and suspension systems that are based on 60s type a-arms, steerin' gears, etc. ...even though the horsepower has tripled that You are tryin' to stick down.... :headbang:

A racing sport not yet mentioned, and one of my favs are the World Class Rally Car races..... most often NOT seen on TV much anymore.....  pure guts 'n a hell of alot of talent drivin' those machines...  I've seen local SCCA meets here, but they pale in comparison to the world class events..... The Danes have (had) that pretty much to themselves in the winner's circle.....  any name ending in ...nen was the usual winner.

WRC is something that is amazing, but I don't understand how to watch it.  Watch everyone go by and then hurry up and get to the next spot to watch them go by.

Driving in something like that would be incredible.  I get the sport, just not the spectating.

The events I watched were in the local mountains.  We would watch at one venue then go to another, no hurry really.  By the time we would get to another venue, we'd be ahead of the pack most of the time.... pretty good stuff !

........and I agree - spectator safety is out of touch ! !   Also difficult to control.  Guess that's part of the excitement for some people...   not me  ! ! !    TV offered the best possible viewing, imo....   some of those camerapeople were as nuts as the spectators.... ! ! !

I believe Discovery HD shows the WRC, i've watched it many times since i've had the ability to and it is truely amazing, those drivers and Navs are as nuts as anyone in racing. Not sure about spectating either...same as the desert racing we have out West, its fine for a coupla minutes but if ya can only see 1/20th of the track i'll take the Tv coverage and save some $$$, they almost get it all. My buddys setting up a truck to go racing so i'm anticipating many weekends out in the dirt and sand, hope I can stay interested.

........and I agree - spectator safety is out of touch !

My Cousins, Kenneth and Larry Hargrove used to race the Desert Trucks years ago.... :headbang:.....They lived outside Los Angeles, then moved to Texas. Kenneth died a few years ago of a Brain Tumor...... :sad1:

I'll check the internet for times, but if you get a handle on when they're on, lemme know ! !   I'd love to see 'em again.  It's been a long time.

For a young guy ya showed up pretty late to the party. The deal here is we're still going with this thread and through no fault of Dutchy or Nomo who have tried to happy ending it many times it just keeps on kicking. Feel free to add your own Skuuter racing pics or something close whenever you like. Here's another one from me
